Here at Sparkle Towers HQ, we take great pride in ensuring our products, packaging and processes are kept as sustainable as possible. Obviously we aren’t perfect and never claim to be, but with just one planet and no ‘planet b’, we’re making it our responsibility to do as much as we can to look after our lovely world and future generations. There are steps we can all take to live more eco-friendly lives and ensure a bright and sparkly future for everyone!
Whether you’re looking to make some simple lifestyle changes or you’re already a seasoned sustainability pro, here are 5 easy peasy (tried and tested!) tips from Team Alyssa to help reduce your impact on the environment.
Anyone who knows anything about packaging in retail will probably know that making significant changes to packaging can be quite expensive: the recycled paper and card that we use within our printed media often costs far more than purchasing high-gloss card and paper that has not yet had a previous life, and switching to eco cardboard for gift bags and boxes is similarly pricey.
1. Daily Quick-Fixes
Living more sustainably doesn’t have to be a chore! Simple lifestyle changes are quick and easy to implement into your day and can be highly effective as you are much more likely to stick with them.
From switching off any unused appliances and carrying a reusable coffee cup, reducing food waste and recycling at home and in the office, there are a plethora of small changes that anyone can introduce almost immediately (with the added bonus of saving money and resources)!
Team Alyssa takes great joy in lovingly wrapping your products in recyclable packaging and filling parcels with biodegradable, compostable packaging peanuts, allowing us to send your items with great care while minimising the environmental impact!
Top tip: Why not give your old birthday and christmas cards from each year a new life by making your own gift tags for the following year? It is so easy and really satisfying too!
2. Staying Green Online
In the midst of the digital age, there has never been a better time for us to turn our attention to sustainable virtual habits.
Our team makes great use of WhatsApp and other platforms to communicate internally and reduce the number of emails we send. We were surprised to learn the true impact of emails: according to a study by OVO Energy, if all adults in the UK sent one fewer email per day, the carbon saved within one year would be equivalent to taking 3,334 diesel cars off the road , or 81,152 people boarding a flight from Heathrow to Madrid!
One less ‘thankyou’ or ‘cheers’ email a week really could have you making positive changes without you even realising!
3. Eat with the Seasons
Not only does food bought in-season taste much better, it tends to be cheaper and more readily available. Buying seasonally allows you to support local companies and contribute to a balanced lifestyle by consuming a variety of produce!
If you’re here in the UK like Team Alyssa, keep your eyes peeled this summer for blackberries, strawberries, new potatoes, lettuce and cucumber. The Vegetarian Society has a handy list of seasonal produce throughout the year to make seasonal buying easy https://vegsoc.org/cookery-school/blog/seasonal-uk-grown-produce/, and for anyone living elsewhere, discovering your seasonal and local produce is only a quick search away!
Meatless Mondays are a popular way to reduce the environmental impact of our foods: as simple as switching a meal or two a week from meat to a vegetarian or vegan option, it’s an effective way of reducing water and land use. Two members of Team Alyssa are happily vegetarian and vegan!
4. Lower Your Carbon Footprint
Whether you decide to walk or cycle to work once a week or make use of public transport for those longer distances, every effort helps in reducing our overall carbon footprint. Walking rather than driving 10km a week can help save over 300kg of greenhouse gas emissions per year !
For those needing to drive, car sharing can be a wonderful option, reducing both carbon emissions and fuel costs. This can be an excellent option for days out and work commutes alike and helps make your journey a little more interesting!
5. Sustainable Holidays
We’re sure with all this lovely weather we’ve been having recently, holidays are on everyone’s minds at the moment!
Holidaying closer to home or embarking on a staycation can greatly reduce your carbon footprint as well as any time spent travelling. Not only are staycations wonderful for finding all those hidden native gems, but they also provide a wonderful boost to the national economy and support local businesses. If you are travelling abroad, you may consider a holiday in a popular cycling city such as Amsterdam or Copenhagen, making a low-emission holiday simple!
A few members of our team are looking forward to some wonderful holidays within the UK later this year-including a lovely eco-friendly holiday in Scotland- and our founder, Alyssa, seeks every UK treehouse she can find to relax in and spend time designing new our stunning collections in the quiet and tranquillity of the countryside.
We love more than anything hearing from our wonderful community: share your thoughts and little hacks below with us because together we can make ALL the changes!
