Cruelty Free and Vegan (where possible!)
Whilst we do not claim to be perfect here at House of Alyssa Smith, we are always striving to do better in the way we run our little brand, and the efforts we make in reducing our carbon footprint are improving every year.
Sustainability is at the heart of our concerns, and we need to work together as a whole world
to help to slow down and reverse the damaging changes that we are seeing.
Whilst we cannot certify that absolutely everything we ever produce is completely vegan, plastic free, recyclable or won’t have an impact on our environment, we can tell you the following-
- Our gorgeous home scents and candles are absolutely not tested on animals, use no animal processes during their making or fragrance and therefor are vegan and cruelty free. Our candles are also free from soy allergens, palm oil, coconut oil are non-carcinogenic.
- Our candles and home scents do not use scents that are in any way endangered such as sandalwood. To create these scents, we combine secret blends of non-endangered scents together to mimic them- You absolutely wouldn’t know the difference, and in our opinion our versions are nicer!
- Most of our jewellery presentation boxes and gift bags are vegan, with our boxes being made from carboard covered in papers and using glue which has no animal products inside it. These are fully recyclable when you remove the foam inserts and ribbons. Most of our loose ribbons (the ones not attached to our boxes) are now being switched where possible to an eco friendly type of ribbon which started its life as discarded plastic bottles! We aren’t perfect, but we are making small switches as and when we can. If you would like to make sure your jewellery presentation box is a vegan one, please let us know at the checkout or give us a call and we will be happy to ensure your packaging is fully vegan.
- Our jewellery suedette pouches are now vegan. These are great for taking on your travels and for transporting your most precious pieces. We used to use small Italian leather pouches but made the switch in 2018 to a vegan and animal friendly alternative.
- We do not use bees wax inside our jewellery workshop at Sparkle Towers unlike many traditional jewellers. Bees wax is often used to help lubricate silversmithing saw blades during the hand cutting process. But with our bee’s needing all the help they can get, we use a synthetic alternative which works just as well.
- Our satin gift wrap is not only re-usable and sustainable (very handy to pop in your handbag with some little essentials inside!) but it is also vegan as it is made from synthetic fibres and not made from animal fibres like real silk. We opted for an animal friendly alterative to real silk because we could afford to, and with such gorgeous alternatives on the market we didn’t think real silk was essential for our jewellery wraps. We were inspired to create this after seeing the waste of wrapping paper at Christmas, and decided we could and should do better.
- We do our best to keep packaging to a minimum – This involves everything from our jewellery and home wear presentation packaging to the protective packaging that goes with it to keep it safe during transit and delivery to its new homes. We try to use recycled, recyclable and also biodegradable ‘stuffing’ where possible to keep your sparkles and gorgeous goodies safe in transit, and our white peanuts which are put inside our parcels are fully biodegradable, disappearing when run under the tap. Whilst we all know it is simply lovely to receive a package in the post with all the bells and whistles and extra packaging which is of course fabulous for first impressions, it’s really not great for the environment having excess packaging, even when it is recyclable. If the additional packaging isn’t needed- we simply won’t put it in! In fact, if you would like totally minimal packaging, please do let us know at the checkout and we will do our best to not include any extras at all
Our efforts in sustainability will continue as we aim to grow our little brand, and we are always looking for ways to do better and improve the people we are, and the brand we can be. We have come a long way in the last few years, but we still have a very long way to go as a business, as a country and as a world.
