Jewellery Worth Keeping: Why We Choose Slow Fashion
Why We’re Proud to Create Jewellery Slowly – Made to Last; Not Made to Waste
The world of fashion moves incredibly quickly. There is always a new trend to follow, another collection being launched and something else we’re encouraged to buy before immediately moving on to the next thing.
At House of Alyssa Smith, that has never been the way we want to create.
We don’t make throwaway jewellery designed to be enjoyed for five minutes and then forgotten. We want every ASJ creation to become part of your story—a solid, meaningful keepsake that can be worn and appreciated for years, gifted thoughtfully to a friend or loved one, and perhaps eventually passed down to someone new.
We’re proud to be a small, independent slow-fashion jewellery brand. For us, that means taking the time to develop our ideas properly, creating only what we need, preserving the quality and character of every design, and reusing materials and packaging wherever possible.
Jewellery doesn’t stop being special because it isn’t new
Fast fashion constantly tells us that we need something different. Designs are created quickly, produced in huge quantities and replaced as soon as the next trend arrives. Nothing is given enough time to be properly appreciated.
We believe that if a piece is still beautiful, meaningful and loved by our collectors, it shouldn’t be discarded simply because it isn’t brand new.
Some of our designs have been part of ASJ for more than a decade. Our sterling silver racetrack charms and necklaces, for example, have been created at Sparkle Towers for over ten years. They remain incredibly personal pieces because every circuit represents different memories—perhaps a first race weekend, a favourite driver, an unforgettable victory or years spent visiting the same track with someone special.
Our Steering Wheel Charm was originally launched in 2015 and made its popular comeback this year. Its return proved that a good design doesn’t have an expiry date. It can disappear for a while and still be welcomed back years later by both long-standing collectors and customers discovering it for the first time.
As the saying goes: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
The designs that helped build ASJ
Our large chequered flags were our very first design, and their story certainly didn’t end with that original creation.
More than a decade later, the chequered flag remains an important part of our jewellery. We have continued to revisit and reinterpret it through our glittered flag pieces, double-flag motorsport creations and even our flag charm bracelet.
The original idea hasn’t simply been replaced by something newer. It has grown with us.
Our first-ever three-dimensional motorsport design was our sterling silver 3D helmet. Instead of leaving it behind when we developed new techniques, we adapted it into our moving-visor helmet—preserving the character of the original while finding a clever new way to bring it to life.
These pieces are a part of ASJ history. Long-standing collectors may remember their first launches, while newer customers can now discover designs that helped shape the jewellery we make today.
That longevity is exactly what slow fashion means to us. A design shouldn’t become irrelevant simply because another year has passed.
Why wonderful jewellery cannot be rushed
Creating distinctive jewellery takes time.
Before a finished design can reach your jewellery box, we need to develop the original idea, consider how it will work as a wearable piece, refine the proportions and decide which details are essential to its character.
More complex designs may need to be created through CAD before moulds can be produced for casting in sterling silver. Both the CAD design and the silver casting moulds are a significant investment, so they need to be right—not simply finished as quickly as possible.
If we rush that process, we risk losing the things that make an ASJ piece special. Small details could be missed or reproduced incorrectly. A design might be made lighter simply to speed up or reduce the cost of production, affecting the substantial quality we want our jewellery to have. An inventive feature could be abandoned because it requires more development.
We would rather take longer and create something properly.
Many of the most memorable ASJ pieces could not have existed if our only priority had been speed. Long-standing collectors may remember designs such as our opening magic lamp and opening babushka. These weren’t generic shapes created to follow a passing trend. They were imaginative little works of art, developed carefully over time and filled with personality and meaning.
Each one had a story behind it. Each one gave its wearer something to discover. That is the sort of jewellery we want to continue making.
Keepsakes, collectibles and future heirlooms
Fast-fashion jewellery is often designed around speed, volume and a low price. That can result in quality becoming secondary to how quickly the next collection can be produced and sold.
Our priorities are different.
We want our pieces to feel solid and beautifully made. We want the details to be correct. We want you to pick up an ASJ design years after purchasing it and remember exactly why you chose it.
Jewellery can represent so much more than an outfit. It can remind you of a person, place, achievement, race track, favourite sport, beloved animal or important moment in your life.
It can also become a thoughtful gift that carries real meaning. We don’t want you to give someone something they’ll enjoy briefly before eventually throwing it away. We want your gift to live in their jewellery box, gather memories and perhaps one day be passed down to another loved one.
Whether it’s one of our long-standing designs, a limited-edition treasure or a completely bespoke creation developed around your own story, every piece should feel worthy of its place in your collection.
New designs with a reason to exist
Being a slow-fashion brand doesn’t mean we’ll ever stop creating new jewellery. Alyssa will always have ideas, and Sparkle Towers will always be filled with sketches, gemstones, experiments and new miniature masterpieces.
However, we don’t want to release hundreds of new pieces simply to keep pace with fast-fashion brands.
We want every new ASJ design to have a reason to exist. It might introduce an unusual movement or opening feature, tell a meaningful story, transform a familiar symbol into something unexpected or offer our collectors something genuinely different.
Occasionally, that means you may see fewer new designs from us. Some may be created in very small batches, while others will be completely one of a kind. That isn’t because we have stopped being inventive. It is because we’re giving our ideas the time and attention they deserve.
Creativity isn’t a race.
Limited editions, small batches and less waste
Producing smaller quantities also allows us to make only what we genuinely need.
Instead of creating large amounts of stock that may remain unused, we can respond to what our collectors actually love. Some designs are therefore released in limited runs, while others are made using materials that can never be sourced in exactly the same way again.
Although limited availability sometimes means a piece disappears once the materials are gone, it also makes each design feel more personal and helps us avoid unnecessary waste.
A limited edition should feel special because you have found something unusual—not because you have been pressured into buying something you don’t truly want.
We always encourage our collectors to shop thoughtfully. Choose a piece because you love it, because it represents something to you and because you can imagine wearing and treasuring it for years.
Giving existing materials a new story
Jewellery materials don’t stop being beautiful because their original collection has ended.
At Sparkle Towers, we can sometimes have small quantities of beads, pearls, gemstones and other materials remaining from previous designs. If we already have something wonderful waiting in the workshop, we don’t believe in purchasing more unnecessarily.
Instead, we look for ways to transform those materials into something new.
A handful of beads might inspire a bracelet. A few remaining pearls could become part of a one-of-a-kind necklace. An unusual gemstone may influence an entire small collection.
This approach reduces unnecessary buying and challenges us creatively. Rather than automatically ordering something new, we can pause, look at what we already have and ask: “What beautiful thing could this become?”
It means some designs may only ever exist in tiny quantities—but that becomes part of their story.
Why your order may arrive in a reused outer box
Our thoughtful approach doesn’t stop once the jewellery has been made.
Some of our newer customers have contacted us to ask why their order has occasionally arrived in an unbranded outer box—or even packaging carrying the name of another company.
The honest answer is simple: we reuse suitable packaging whenever we can.
As a business, we receive supplies in all kinds of cardboard boxes. If an outer box is clean, strong and perfectly capable of protecting another parcel, we don’t believe it should be sent to landfill simply because it has already completed one journey.
So yes, your beautiful ASJ mug might occasionally arrive inside an old Amazon box!
That isn’t us being cheap or taking less care with your order. Your jewellery and gifts will still be packed safely and lovingly. We’re simply giving perfectly usable outer packaging another life instead of purchasing something new unnecessarily.
The outside of your parcel may not always look beautifully coordinated, but the treasure inside has received just as much care.
Return your ASJ boxes and earn loyalty points
We don’t only reuse the outer packaging that arrives at Sparkle Towers. We also ask our collectors to return their ASJ jewellery boxes whenever possible.
If you return 10 or more ASJ boxes and they are still clean and in a reusable condition, we’ll add loyalty points to your account. You can then spend those points on even more sparkles!
It means a perfectly good jewellery box can be checked, reused and sent on to another sparkle-loving home rather than being discarded. You’re rewarded for helping us reduce waste, and each box has the chance to carry another special ASJ creation.
Please remember that the boxes must be returned in a suitable, reusable condition for the loyalty points to be awarded.
Thoughtful choices, not claims of perfection
We would never pretend that running a jewellery business has no environmental impact. We use materials, receive supplies, make packaging and send orders to collectors around the world.
Being a slow-fashion brand doesn’t mean claiming to be perfect. It means thinking carefully about the choices available to us and making more responsible ones wherever we realistically can.
Sometimes that means creating a limited batch instead of overproducing. Sometimes it means transforming beads we already own. Sometimes it means spending longer developing a design so its quality and details aren’t compromised. Sometimes it means keeping a beloved piece available for more than a decade rather than replacing it for the sake of novelty.
And sometimes it simply means sending your parcel in a reused cardboard box.
Each choice may feel small by itself, but together they help us build a more thoughtful business.
Made slowly, chosen thoughtfully and designed to last
House of Alyssa Smith will always be filled with new ideas, imaginative mechanisms, meaningful designs and exciting limited editions. However, we will never create simply for the sake of keeping up with fast fashion.
From our original large chequered flags and long-standing racetrack jewellery to the return of our 2015 steering wheel and the evolution of our first 3D helmet, our history is proof that a wonderful design can be appreciated for many years.
We want to create jewellery that lasts. Jewellery that carries stories, becomes part of your collection and can eventually be passed on to someone you love.
Thank you for choosing your pieces thoughtfully, supporting a small slow-fashion business, returning your reusable jewellery boxes and understanding why your sparkles may occasionally arrive inside an unexpected outer package.
After all, it’s what’s inside the box—and the story it will carry—that truly matters.
