We are so excited to announce that here at Alyssa Smith Jewellery, we are able to use the very special limited edition Coronation hallmark from The Assay Office on our precious metal jewellery, which has been especially made to celebrate and commemorate the historic event of King Charles III Coronation which takes place on 6th May 2023.
Available from March 1st 2023, this special commemorative mark will be available for a limited time only. Historically, commemorative marks have been added to the regular UK hallmarks on UK made jewellery to signify a special event, and the last special edition hallmark available was the stunning Royal Orb with a 70 inside which was designed and released to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of our late Queen. This new mark depicts the King’s head against an oval background.
Where did the image come from? The mark chosen for this commemorative hallmark has been based on a medal by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS and using artwork supplied by Thomas Fattorini, the mark depicts the King’s head against an oval background.
The King’s Coronation Mark is an optional mark for UK jewellery who wish to use it, as long as they are registered with the UK assay office with their own designer mark.
It can be applied to items made in the UK in gold, silver, platinum or palladium, at any of the four UK assay offices around the county. The approval process for the mark involved the assay offices considering a selection of possible designs and submitting two to the British Hallmarking Council which chose the design depicting the King’s head as the winner.
Alyssa has had her own hallmark (reading ALS) since before our gorgeous little brand was even officially started- as she ordered and registered her special, unique mark back when she was still a university student. No two maker hallmarks can be the same, so you will see the shape in which Alyssa’s initials are captured inside is quite unique from others you may see. You would think that our chosen hallmark would be ASJ (for Alyssa Smith Jewellery) but since the mark predates the Company trading name, Alyssa chose her own name initials for this special mark and it only seemed right to continue with this once the Company had been dreamed up and started – making our unique mark even more special!
Over the year of 2023, we will be releasing a series of limited edition designs which will each depict this special coronation hallmark on them- a real collector item and surely something which will appear on the antiques road show one day…. Maybe!? Every piece with this special mark on is considered a collector item and has been designed to be cherished, so do keep an eye out for our limited edition masterpieces which you will see popping up periodically over the next year or so! Each piece will be limited edition in both numbers and the time in which we are selling them.
A spokesperson for the Assay Offices of the UK said “The UK Assay Offices have a long tradition of capturing special events with the creation of commemorative hallmarks. The special mark provides an additional narrative for products carrying the mark. Equally importantly, it brings the importance of the hallmark into focus with the jewellery-buying consumer.”
